Kaolin, which is also known as "china clay," is a white, alumina-silicate used in making paper, plastics, rubber, paints and many other products. Kaolin deposits in middle Georgia resulted from the erosion of deeply weathered crystalline rocks in the Piedmont Plateau, which were deposited along Georgia's Fall Line.

Kaolin Mining In Middle Georgia THE FALL LINE The origin of kaolin can be traced to the Cretaceous geologic period, about 70 million years ago when dinosaurs roamed the earth and much of the southern half of Georgia was covered by a great sea. The climate was more tropical than now.
Kaolin
The kaolin-forming clays are all hydrous aluminium silicates, essentially kaolinite [Al 2 (Si 2 O 5 ) (OH) 4 ], that are formed by the decomposition of other aluminous minerals, especially feldspars. Kaolin deposits can be nearly pure kaolinite or may contain impurities that affect the characteristics of the clay.

Since 1886, kaolin has been mined on a small scale for ceramics, refractory bricks, industrial fillers, and cement manufacture. Kaolin formed by deep weathering of a 30 m thick quartz–biotite schist unit at the top of the Adelaidean Saddleworth Formation. The bulk of the ore is pale yellow to white sandy kaolin used in general cement manufacture.

In 2005, 22 companies mined kaolin in nine US states. Production in Georgia declined to 6.19 Mt down from 6.78 Mt in 2004. Despite the decline, Georgia remained the leading producer state followed by Alabama, South Carolina, Arkansas, Texas, Nevada, California, North Carolina and Florida.
